Mrs Murphy's Year 4 - Release our 'home-grown' butterflies

1st Jun 2017

In year 4, one of our topics is the lifecycle of a butterfly and to compliment this we took delivery of 5 tiny caterpillars.

Over a few weeks we have watched their complete metamorphosis with much excitement.

The process was quick and it wasn't long until the tiny caterpillars grew and began to build their chrysalis. They hung in that state for a short time and over the weekend they completed their transformation into beautiful butterflies - Admirals and Painted Ladies.

We studied our butterflies closely, noting the camouflage pattern on the underside of their wings and learning about their migration from North Africa and where the Painted Lady lays her eggs - on thistles if you're interested!

Then we took them outside into our lovely garden and outdoor classroom to be released.  We noticed lots of wildflowers and blooms in the neighbouring gardens which we knew the butterflies would enjoy.  We also spotted a little frog!

Some of our butterflies were more excited than others about flying away; one wanted to sunbathe for a few minutes before disappearing.  However, eventually we waved goodbye to all of our butterflies and watched them flutter off into the sunshine.

What a lovely sight!
