Titanic Belfast Trip

21st Feb 2017

on Tuesday 21st February we set off for Titanic Belfast in order to kick start our next world around us topic on Titanic. We began our trip on the Nomadic which had tendered 1st and 2nd class passengers out to Titanic in 1912. On board we looked at emigration and the sort of things that passengers travelling to America on Titanic might have brought with with them, we also completed a craft activity designing a patch that might go onto a patchwork quilt. We finished this session by looking at all the reasons people might decide to emigrate.

After break we made our way across to the Titanic Centre for a tour around the various exhibitions. Here we learnt what life was like in Belfast in the early 1900s and how Titanic was built using huge gantries to support the structure. As we worked our way round we saw the luxury of 1st class to what life was like for a 3rd class passenger. Our tour finished with a look at what Titanic looks like now at the bottom of the Atlantic.

When we had finished our lunch we took a walk outside and down the massive slipways that had been used to build Titanic and her sister ship the Olympic. Walking down the slipway we were struck by the sheer size these ships must have been. Then it was back on the bus and home time. A great day was had by all.
